Skin prep for wedding makeup: your six week countdown
Makeup can do a lot, but it can’t out-perform the skin underneath it. The good news: six weeks of small, boring, consistent habits beats any expensive facial booked in a panic the week before. This is the countdown I give my own brides, and none of it needs a dermatologist or a second mortgage.
Six weeks out: set the routine
Pick a gentle cleanser, a moisturiser your skin likes, and a daily SPF, then repeat them morning and night until the wedding. That’s the whole program. Consistency does more for how foundation sits than any single treatment, because what I’m working with on the day is the average of your last six weeks, not the night before.
The SPF matters even for a winter wedding. Cancer Council has been saying it for decades and they’re right, and on top of the health case, fresh sun damage shows through makeup as texture and colour that no base fixes. Daily SPF from six weeks out is the cheapest skin upgrade there is.
This is also the deadline for anything new. A product your skin has never met gets six weeks to prove itself or it waits until after the wedding.
boring wins here
Four to three weeks out: treatments and brows
If facials are part of your routine, the last one lands four weeks out, from someone who has treated your skin before. Skin takes time to settle after a proper treatment, and the four week buffer means any purging or redness is long gone before I meet you.
Brows get shaped and tinted around the three week mark, then tidied, not re-invented, in wedding week. Hair colour follows the same rule. The version of you at the trial should be the version of you on the morning, or the recipe we wrote stops matching the ingredients.
Add gentle exfoliation once or twice a week from here, gentle being the operative word. You’re after smooth, not scoured.
Two weeks out: nothing new
From a fortnight out, your bathroom shelf is frozen. No new serums, no first-time treatments, no impulse buys from someone at a counter, however convincing. Two weeks is not enough runway to recover from a reaction, and I have seen a single enthusiastic weekend undo six patient weeks.
If a spray tan is part of the plan, this is when you patch test it. The tan itself happens two to three days before the wedding, and I’d love to know about it beforehand, since a new skin tone moves the foundation match we locked at the trial.
no new products, none
Wedding week
The glamorous secret of wedding week skincare is that it’s mostly sleep and water. Dehydrated skin grabs powder and shows every fine line by 3pm. Rested skin does half my work for me. Beyond that, the week is about not sabotaging six good weeks in five days.

The morning itself
Cleanse, moisturise, and stop there. No SPF on the day itself, it flashes back white in photography, and no last-minute masks or scrubs. You bring clean, looked-after skin and I bring everything else. That division of labour has never once let me down.
If you want the fuller picture of how the morning runs, the trial guide walks through all of it, and the services page covers what a bridal booking includes. Questions about your own skin? Ask me through the booking form, I answer all of them myself.

Quick answers
- When should I get my last facial before the wedding?
- Four weeks out at the latest, and only from someone who has treated your skin before. A strong facial two days before the wedding is a gamble I have watched brides lose.
- Should I start retinol before my wedding?
- Not inside the six weeks. Retinol is a long game and the adjustment period brings dryness and flaking, which is exactly what foundation clings to. Start it after the honeymoon.
- When should I get a spray tan before the wedding?
- Two to three days before, with a patch test a fortnight earlier. Fresh tan transfers onto dresses and shifts the shade match we chose at your trial, so tell me if you are planning one.
- What if I break out on the wedding day?
- Tell me and then stop worrying about it. Concealing a blemish is routine work with the right products, and it will not survive into your photos. Picking at it is the only thing that makes my job harder.
