How to choose your bridal makeup artist in Melbourne

Ann-Marie Kriston 10 August 2026 · 8 min read

It feels strange writing this as a makeup artist, because obviously I’d love you to book me. But most brides only do this once, Melbourne has hundreds of us, and the difference between a good booking and a stressful one comes down to questions people don’t know to ask. So here is the guide I’d hand my own sister, and it applies whether you book me or someone else entirely.

Read the portfolio properly

A portfolio’s best photo tells you almost nothing. Any artist working a few years has one stunner. Scroll deeper and look for consistency instead: does the skin look like skin across ten different faces, ten different ages, ten different skin tones? One beautiful bride is a good day. Ten is a standard.

Give video more weight than stills. Filters and editing hide a lot in photographs, and stories or reels from real wedding mornings show you texture the grid never will. And check the work matches what you want. An artist whose feed is full-glam festival looks may be brilliant, at exactly the thing you’re not after. You can judge me by the same test in my portfolio.

consistency beats highlights

The trial is the interview

Instagram shows you the artist’s work. The trial shows you the artist. You’re watching for whether they listen, how they take feedback, whether the room feels calmer or tenser with them in it. On the wedding morning this person stands closer to you than almost anyone else all day, for hours, while the clock runs.

you’re hiring calm as much as you’re hiring makeup

An artist who bristles at “can we soften the eyes?” in a trial will not improve under pressure. One who welcomes it is worth holding onto. I’ve written up exactly what a trial with me looks like so you know what good should feel like, wherever you end up.

Questions worth asking

Ask these before any deposit leaves your account. Tick them off as you go, the list keeps your place between phone calls.

Fees, travel and the fine print

A 5am start for a sunrise ceremony costs more than a 9am one, and it should. So does an hour of driving to a Yarra Valley venue. Good artists put these numbers in writing up front. The pattern to watch for is the low headline quote that grows a travel fee, an early fee and a lash fee after you’re emotionally committed.

Deposits are standard and they protect you both. You’re buying a date off the market in a small business’s calendar, and a written agreement about what happens if plans change is a sign of professionalism, not pessimism.

When Melbourne books out

Melbourne’s wedding season runs hot from October to April. Saturday dates in that window go nine to twelve months out, and the artists whose work you admire go first. Winter and weekday dates breathe easier, and a few months is usually plenty.

Peak season Saturdays are the first to go

If your date sits in the busy window, start conversations early, trial when it makes sense, and lock the one who passed the interview. And if you’d like one of those conversations to be with me, the booking form is the fastest way in. What’s included is on the services page.

Quick answers

How far in advance should I book a wedding makeup artist in Melbourne?
Nine to twelve months for a Saturday between October and April. Winter dates and weekdays are far more forgiving, and a few months is usually enough.
Do makeup artists travel to your venue?
Most of us do, me included. Expect a travel fee outside a set radius and an early start fee for pre-dawn ceremonies. Both should be in writing before you pay a deposit.
Should I do a trial before booking?
Where the artist offers it, a paid trial before you commit is the best money you will spend on the decision. Some of us hold dates with a deposit first, so ask how it works. My version is in the trial guide on this journal.
What should a bridal makeup booking include?
At minimum: a trial, the day-of application, and clarity about touch-ups and timing. Everything included in mine is listed on the services page.
